The MBL lobsterman’s cooperative is a family run business on Westport Island, Maine. The Maine Lobster industry is a very special part of the state’s history. When lobster was first discovered on the rocks of the Maine Coast it was seen as a water bug and something that only those who struggled to find food ate. Now, lobster is a luxury around the world- especially Maine Lobster. More importantly, lobstering has been a tremendous source for jobs within our state for decades. Lobster is shipped from Maine around the world daily and it is a huge draw for tourism to the state.
Here at the MBL lobsterman’s cooperative, we are proud to be a part of such an important piece of Maine’s culture. The Mare Bear (see below) fishes about 600 traps out of Plummer Cove and throughout the waters surrounding Westport Island, Woolwich, Georgetown and Edgecomb, Maine. Lobstering is also part of our family history!
